My total flying hours in 2025 was 39.4. My total flying hour is now 925.0. Probably it'll take another three years to get to the next milestone of 1000 hours.
When I flew late December, Garmin 500 indicated that the wind was blowing at 45 to 49kt at 3000ft. The air was smooth. No turbulence at all. So, the air mass was smoothly moving at that fast speed. Since the flap-down stall speed of Cessna 172 was 40kt, I thought I should be able to stop in the air relative to the ground if I slow down enough. So I set my airplane to the slow flight into the wind. The following is the video from the slow flight.
GS on the instrument panel tells the ground speed. My airplane was flying at 45kt or so into the wind. But, wind was pushing back at almost the same speed. Therefore, it was almost stopping relative to the ground. In the video, minimum ground speed was like 6kt or so, but when I climbed up to 6000ft and tried the same, I was able to slow down to 2kt ground speed.
If someone was watching from the ground, the person would have thought a weird fixed-wing airplane, not a helicopter, was stopping in the air.
